Who Is Jet Li?
Jet Li, born Li Lianjie on April 26, 1963, in Beijing, China, is a renowned actor and martial artist. Li’s martial arts career began at an early age, winning his first national wushu championship at the age of 11. He retired from competitive martial arts at 17 and transitioned to acting, debuting in the 1982 film Shaolin Temple, which propelled him to stardom in China. Over the years, Li has built a successful career in both Chinese and Hollywood cinema, appearing in iconic films such as Romeo Must Die, Kiss of the Dragon, and The Forbidden Kingdom.
Early Life and Martial Arts Fame
Growing up in a modest household as the youngest of five children, Li faced significant hardships early in life, including the loss of his father when he was just 2 years old. At 8, he began studying wushu, a Chinese martial art, and quickly showed exceptional promise. His family, recognizing his talent, enrolled him in a specialized sports school. Li later shared with Muscle & Fitness magazine that the school provided not only better educational opportunities but also a means of escape from the hardships of his family’s circumstances.
At 11, Li won his first national wushu championship, a victory that marked the beginning of his international martial arts career. Over the next few years, he traveled to more than 45 countries as a member of the Beijing Wushu Team and became a celebrated athlete, even performing a martial arts demonstration for President Richard Nixon during a 1974 trip to the United States. He held the title of All-Around National Wushu Champion for five consecutive years.
Film Career and Hollywood Success
Li’s transition to film began with Shaolin Temple (1982), which launched his acting career. By the late 1980s, he had moved to Hong Kong and immersed himself in the burgeoning martial arts film industry. His role as the legendary hero Wong Fei-hung in the Once Upon a Time in China series (1991) cemented his status as a leading figure in action cinema.
In 1998, Li made his Hollywood debut in Lethal Weapon 4, where he portrayed a villainous crime boss. This marked the beginning of his involvement in English-language films, with roles in Romeo Must Die (2000), Kiss of the Dragon (2001), and The One (2001). The latter, a science fiction film, received mixed reviews but highlighted Li’s versatility as an actor. His collaboration with renowned director Luc Besson in Kiss of the Dragon was particularly praised, with The New York Times lauding his action sequences as groundbreaking.
Li’s star continued to rise with his role in the 2002 film Hero, a visually striking historical drama that was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. He followed this with Cradle 2 the Grave (2003) and faced a moment of personal and public crisis in 2004 when reports erroneously claimed that he had died during the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami, though he was only slightly injured while ensuring the safety of his daughter.
Action Hero and Later Films
In the 2000s, Li’s filmography expanded with more action-packed roles. He starred in Unleashed (2005), where he portrayed a man raised as a violent weapon, and Fearless (2006), a biographical film about the martial artist Huo Yuanjia. Both films received critical acclaim, with Fearless becoming a major box-office success. Li also appeared in War (2007) and The Forbidden Kingdom (2008), the latter featuring a historic collaboration with fellow martial arts legend Jackie Chan.
Li’s Hollywood career reached another milestone with The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), where he played a powerful emperor awakened from his ancient tomb. The film performed well with action fans, despite mixed reviews.

Li continued to divide his time between Hollywood and Chinese-language films, with notable roles in The Expendables (2010) and its sequels, as well as a role as the emperor in Disney’s 2020 live-action remake of Mulan.
