Latest News: Maya Hawke Shines as New Emotion ‘Anxiety’ in Inside Out 2 Trailer

Nine years after the release of Pixar’s beloved Inside Out, fans are eagerly anticipating the sequel as the first trailer for Inside Out 2 dropped on November 9. The trailer introduces a new emotion: Anxiety, voiced by rising star Maya Hawke. In the preview, Anxiety joins the familiar emotions—Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust—bringing unexpected changes to the dynamic.

“Anxiety might be new to the crew, but she’s not the type to take a back seat,” said director Kelsey Mann in a statement. “That’s fitting when you think about how anxiety operates in all of our minds.”

Hawke joins an all-star cast that includes returning voices Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Tony Hale, and Liza Lapira. Inside Out 2 is set to hit theaters on June 14, 2024, and promises to explore new emotional landscapes with the same heart and humor that made the original a classic.

Who Is Maya Hawke?

Maya Hawke, daughter of actors Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, is a rising star in both acting and music. Best known for her role as Robin Buckley in Netflix’s Stranger Things, she has also made her mark in the film industry with appearances in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Do Revenge, Asteroid City, Wildcat, and The Kill Room. As a musician, Hawke has released two self-produced albums, including her 2022 release, Moss.

Early Life and Parents

Born on July 8, 1998, in New York City, Maya Ray Thurman Hawke is the eldest of two children from Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke’s marriage. Her parents, both acclaimed actors, met on the set of Gattaca in 1996 and married in May 1998, just before Maya was born. She has a younger brother, Levon, born in 2002, as well as three younger half-sisters from her parents’ subsequent relationships. Following her parents’ divorce in 2005, Maya grew up in Brooklyn, where she attended Saint Ann’s School.

As a child, Maya was diagnosed with dyslexia, which made traditional schooling challenging. She eventually transferred to a school designed for children with learning disabilities, where she developed her reading skills. In a 2020 NPR interview, she shared that she still faces some limitations due to dyslexia.

Career Beginnings

Maya initially explored modeling, working with brands such as AllSaints and Calvin Klein, and appeared in Vogue. However, her true passion was always acting. She participated in school plays and attended summer acting camps before enrolling in Juilliard. Though she left Juilliard after one year to pursue acting full-time, her parents were initially cautious about her entering the entertainment industry. They wanted her to develop her own passion and work ethic before supporting her decision to follow in their footsteps.

Breakthrough with Stranger Things

Maya made her acting debut in 2017 with the BBC adaptation of Little Women and followed up with a role in the thriller Ladyworld. However, her breakout moment came in 2019 when she joined the cast of Stranger Things in its third season. Her portrayal of Robin Buckley was met with critical acclaim, earning her a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Streaming Presentation. She was also part of the ensemble cast nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2020.

Hawke returned to Stranger Things for its fourth season, earning another Best Supporting Actress nomination at the 2022 Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards. She is set to reprise her role in the show’s upcoming final season, which is expected to begin filming in late 2023.

Future of Robin in Stranger Things

In interviews, Hawke has expressed her openness to Robin’s character arc, including the possibility of a romantic storyline, but she is cautious about forcing a relationship into the narrative. “I love characters where their love life is not the center of their existence,” she told Yahoo! Entertainment. She has also mentioned being at peace with the idea of Robin meeting a dramatic end in the final season, telling Variety, “I would love to die and get my hero’s moment. I’d love to die with honor.”

With a flourishing career in both acting and music, Maya Hawke is a dynamic talent whose star continues to rise.

Movies and TV Shows

Maya Hawke began her career with television roles but has since built an impressive film portfolio. In 2023 alone, she starred in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, Wildcat, and The Kill Room. Notably, Wildcat was directed by her father, while The Kill Room featured her mother, Uma Thurman. Hawke has openly expressed her enjoyment of working alongside her parents, stating, “I love working with both of them. They’re really awesome, and they’re just amazing at their job.” Looking ahead, her next major release is Maestro, scheduled for theatrical release on November 22, 2023.

Throughout her career, Hawke has appeared in several notable films and TV shows, including:

  • Little Women
  • Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
  • Human Capital
  • The Good Lord Bird
  • Mainstream
  • Do Revenge
  • Asteroid City
  • Wildcat
  • The Kill Room
  • Maestro

Net Worth

Maya Hawke’s estimated net worth is around $3 million, a sum attributed to her roles in acting and modeling. Reports suggest she earned between $200,000 and $250,000 per episode for her role in Stranger Things.

Music Career

In addition to acting, Hawke is an indie-folk singer-songwriter. She released her debut album Blush in August 2020, followed by Moss in September 2022. Her performance of the song “Thérèse” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in March 2023 showcased her musical talent.

While music is a significant creative outlet for Hawke, she has stated that it isn’t her main career focus. In a 2019 interview with Vogue, she explained that she views music as a way to express her poetry. “Since I was a little girl, I was always writing poetry and trying to put it to music, sitting on the couch with my dad singing old folk songs, like Hank Williams and Townes Van Zandt and Johnny Cash,” she shared. For her, music serves as a medium to communicate her poetry in the modern era.

Personal Life

During a June 2023 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Hawke humorously recounted a story about the most trouble she ever got into. She revealed that she once lied to her parents, claiming she was going to therapy when, in fact, she was meeting someone to lose her virginity. She added that her father was “very, very upset.”

Hawke identifies as queer but tends to keep her personal life private. In 2019, she was rumored to be dating Rolling Stone executive Gus Wenner and has also been linked to musician Spencer Barnett and actor Tom Sturridge.
